Wellbeing as a Foundation for Learning
At IC, the wellbeing of our students sits at the heart of our educational project. Supporting their emotional and social growth is not a complement to learning; it is one of its fundamental pillars.
We know that a child or teenager who feels safe, understood, and emotionally grounded is better prepared to learn, build positive relationships, face challenges, take care of themselves, and fully develop their potential.
We live in a complex, fast-changing world that brings extraordinary opportunities but also significant challenges for the development of children and adolescents. That is why we continue to intentionally strengthen the spaces, programmes, and experiences that promote our students’ social and emotional growth, giving them tools to understand themselves better and healthily navigate the world.
Throughout this month, we made progress across several areas that reflect this commitment.
Prevention and Adolescence in Secondary
In Secondary, we opened dedicated spaces focused on substance use prevention, approaching the topic from an educational and reflective perspective. Our students had the opportunity to access clear, well-grounded information, understand how the brain functions during adolescence, and reflect on how the changes of this stage impact their emotions, behaviours, and decision-making.
We also created a space specifically designed for families, because we firmly believe that supporting adolescents requires a strong alliance between home and school.
Digital Citizenship: Relationships, Empathy and Responsibility
We continued working with students from Year 6 to Year 9 around responsible digital behaviour. At a time when so much of our relationships, conversations, and interactions take place in digital spaces, it is essential to help our students develop discernment, empathy, and responsibility in their use of technology and social media.
These sessions gave us the chance to listen to many of their concerns and questions, which will continue to guide our work in the second half of the year. Building healthy digital habits requires consistent messages and support both at home and at school, and we deeply value the active involvement of families in this process.
Mindfulness in Primary
In Primary, our students took part, as has become a tradition over the past few years, in mindfulness workshops, an experience that helps them develop tools for focus, emotional self-regulation, and calm. In a world that so often pulls us toward immediacy and overstimulation, creating space to pause, observe, breathe, and recognise one's own emotions is a valuable skill that supports both school and everyday life.
Conscious Discipline: A Culture of Connection from Early Years
We launched an important new process for our community: Conscious Discipline certification for our entire leadership team, classroom teachers, arts, sports and learning support staff across Early Years and Primary. This training will help us continue building a culture rooted in connection, self-regulation, and positive relationships, aligning the language and strategies we use with students inside and outside the classroom.
We are confident this process will have a meaningful impact on the daily experience of our youngest students. In the coming months, we will invite families to take part in dedicated sessions designed to share practical tools and create continuity between school and home.
Looking back at everything accomplished this month, I am reminded of a conviction we share as an institution: wellbeing is not built through a single activity or programme. It is built in everyday conversations, in the quality of our relationships, in spaces for listening, in timely support, and in the constant intention to help each student develop the skills they need to navigate an increasingly complex world.
As winter break approaches, I invite you to use this time to rest, enjoy your family, and recharge for the second semester. These moments of pause are also opportunities to strengthen bonds, share experiences, and grow in ways that go beyond the classroom.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back with the same enthusiasm and dedication with which we will continue to support the learning and wellbeing of each one of our students.
