The International College trip to THIMUN in The Hague, The Netherlands, has been an incredible experience. The nine participating students: Carlos G., Rafael N., Sofia G., Rebecca L., Zoe M., Tomas E., Daniel F., Sofia G. and Guillermo H., have come together to discover an incredible country and experience. The Netherlands is a wonderful country full of visitors and immigrants from all over the world. All the locals speak Dutch and English and are friendly and open, so you can always ask them anything.
We spent three days in Amsterdam, doing a mixture of cultural activities like a canal cruise and a guided walking tour to discover the city, then a visit to the Van Gogh Museum, followed by ice-skating in the square, a moving plunge into Anne Frank's house and an exploration of the Diamond Museum. Then we headed to The Hague (actually the beach called Scheveningen), where we cycled along the seafront before eating in a lovely sea-view restaurant and then ice-skating again. No broken bones and lots of sliding learning. Finally, we entered the Mauritshuis Gallery to see famous C17th paintings like Vermeer's The Girl with the Pearl Earring, Rembrandt's Self-Portrait or Hanneman’s Portrait of Mary Stuart.
The conference itself is amazing. In the World Forum where world leaders meet (and where Rafael shook the hand of the Dutch Prime Minister - Dick Schoof), our students have slipped into committees of 150 students, each representing a different country or global organisation, and each trying to help solve real-world problems like avoiding the dangers tourism can bring or making cities safer. We represent Luxembourg and have spent time debating, chatting and sharing lunch with students and teachers from Saudi Arabia, Germany, England, Switzerland and many other countries.
Our student, Sofía G., was selected by THIMUN to give the opening speech, an honour that fills us with pride.
