At the first assembly of the second semester, our Head Boy and Head Girl, Stefano Z. and Avril R. welcomed the students back to school and reminded them of the challenges and opportunities they have to look forward to. You can read their speech here.
Mark Rosevearour Head of School, took the opportunity to once again congratulate the cast and staff members of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and the IC Band members for all their hard work and excellent performance.
Mark also shared with the students the current standings of the "Caroline Ayling Cup". Ventus leads the competition with 68 points, while Aqua, in second place, has 38 points. Terra is third with 26 points, and Ignis is currently in fourth place with 24 points. There are still many events to go and the competition is not over!
Valentina Alzueta-Coccaro welcomed Primary students and staff back from Winter Break, expressing her hope that everyone is ready to give their best in the second half of the school year. She highlighted two key upcoming events: the Student-Led Conferences and the Primary School Play.
Eliana López, our IGCSE & IBDP Coordinator, spoke to students and teachers about recent CAS projects and expressed gratitude to the community for their involvement and ongoing support. She highlighted that one of the IB's objectives is to foster a community of caring individuals who contribute to creating a better world. In line with this, and through their CAS projects, our students have achieved the following:
- Y12 students donated a smartboard to Escuela 84 Maldonado for the hearing-impaired.
- Y12 students organised a Uniform Fair and gathered winter clothing for 'La Madriguera', a group that supports single mothers of the 'Kennedy' neighbourhood.
- Y11 students organised the ‘Chocolatada para los Valientes’ during the Secondary School Play and gathered $20.600, which was donated to 'Fundación Pérez Scremini', which supports children with cancer.
- Y11 students organised a CAS day to gather winter clothing for ‘Dejando Huellas’, a non-profit organisation that helps people from the 'Los Caracoles' neighbourhood.
For the third consecutive year, we had students who received 'Outstanding Cambridge Awards'. On this occasion, our Y11 students, Luca C. and Lorenzo D., received two awards each at an awards ceremony held in Montevideo in June.
- Luca and Lorenzo both shared the Top in Uruguay in First Language English.
- Luca was awarded High Achievement in Physics.
- Lorenzo was awarded High Achievement in Chemistry.
These awards recognise the outstanding academic achievements of secondary school learners in Uruguay and indicate that they have outperformed thousands of candidates worldwide who sat Cambridge Examinations. We are proud to celebrate their success and hope that this encourages our current Y10 students who will be sitting their IGCSEs in the upcoming October/November period.
Furthermore, we are delighted to share that 2025 marks the completion of the third edition of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award at International College. This year, 15 students received their awards—8 at the Bronze level and 7 at Silver—after facing meaningful personal and group challenges that helped them grow, enjoy themselves, and learn more about both the world and who they are.
- Bronze Award: Guillermo H., Zoe M., Catalina A., Sofía G., Violeta S., Zoe K., Emma V. and Elena S.
- Silver Award: Lorenzo D., Luca C., Esmeralda P., Genaro P., Julia G., Joaquín M. and Manuel P.
We warmly congratulate them for their spirit of adventure, teamwork, and drive to keep learning and pushing forward.
Looking ahead, we are thrilled to announce that over 30 students will begin their journey through the programme this year, and for the first time at IC, we will have students taking on the Gold Award. It fills us with pride and excitement to support them on this new path. We wish all of them the very best as they embark on an experience that will no doubt leave a lasting impact.
As part of the Punta del Este + Circular programme, promoted by the Municipality of Punta del Este, our Year 11 Environmental Systems and Societies class took part in a series of circular economy workshops. Their project, which they called ICycle, secured second place in the competition among all the proposals submitted.
Over several months, our students applied the Circular Design Thinking methodology to identify waste generated at school and reimagine it as a resource. Among their proposals were: pencils made from reused textile fibres, safety nets crafted from disused soccer nets, and cutlery and trays made from recycled shade mesh. By doing this, not only can they reduce our school's environmental footprint, but also demonstrate that waste can become a tool for change.
Tomás Rabinovich, our Head of Secondary, highlighted some of the successes of last term and reminded the students that at IC, we are all part of something bigger. He shared three ideas about this family we built together, which can help strengthen our community and guide us through the second half of the year with conviction and unity. You can read his words here.
We’re truly happy to have the students back and wish them an excellent start to the semester.
