Dreams and laughter under the stars: a magical night with Shakespeare and the Beatles

Last Friday, 13 June, the International Arena at International College was transformed into an enchanted forest, where love, confusion and music came to life. The play A Midsummer Night's Dream, adapted by the Drama teachers and accompanied by live music by The Beatles, performed by the IC Band, dazzled students, families and teachers alike.

This original version of Shakespeare's classic combined the author's poetic language with a fresh and contemporary staging. The set, created in collaboration between school staff and parents of the cast, ingeniously recreated a magical forest, illuminated by an imposing moon and decorated with Greek-inspired columns and natural elements that accentuated the dreamlike atmosphere.

The cast of Secondary School students surprised the audience with their commitment, charisma and talent. The Rude Mechanicals, performed by Year 7 students, won over the audience with self-confidence and comedy. Carola M., the oldest member of the IC Theatre Company, shone alongside Daniel F., Ema S. and Kian S., forming the ideal team to bring this love affair to life, with humour and emotion. The Fairies provided charm and stage presence, guided with ease by the duo of Leo F. and Chiara T., who led the narrative thread solidly. Finally, The Athenians —Sol V., Paris M., and Maia P., the last two in their first acting challenge—surprised with a solid performance and great stage confidence, demonstrating naturalness and commitment in each intervention.

The Beatles' live music, masterfully performed by the IC Band, accompanied each scene with sensitivity and energy, elevating the stage experience and adding an emotional dimension that crossed generations.

The spontaneous applause was immediate, especially from the Primary students, who thoroughly enjoyed the production. The enthusiasm was even greater at the closing, when the cast performed “All You Need Is Love”, creating a moment of communion and joy that will be difficult to forget.

More than a school play, it was a celebration of art, teamwork and creativity. The production, directed by Cristina Pentreath and Candice Guimarães, managed to build bridges between generations through a vibrant proposal that fused classic literature, legendary music and youth talent. Without a doubt, an unforgettable night for the entire IC community.
